Screen readers and braille displays

Semantics, reading order and textual information form the basis of screen reader and braille display use. Actual behaviour also depends on the browser, reader and device combination.

HTML structure and properties exposed by the browser allow screen readers to present headings, lists, tables and controls on a connected braille display. Navigation methods depend on the tool and its settings.

Assessments must check that colour, position and icons are not the only means of conveying information and that text alternatives suit the images' functions.

Status messages, field errors and dialogs require different treatment. Live regions can signal updates without moving focus; errors and dialogs also require verification of focus management for the journey.

Semantics and live regions alone do not demonstrate usability with a braille display: results must refer to the combinations actually tested.

Tools considered
Desktop and mobile screen readers, refreshable braille displays in both continuous reading and document navigation modes.
Reading order
DOM order and assistive navigation must be assessed across content, controls and dynamic states; visual position alone does not describe the reading journey.
Dynamic announcements
Temporary status messages do not move focus and remain available to assistive technologies through dedicated live regions.

Preparation and method

This page documents the website’s commitment, self-assessment methodology and the sample of pages and components assessed.

The structure draws on useful elements of the AgID model, without presenting this page as a replacement for the official online model where that obligation applies.

Self-assessment was performed on a sample of the website's most representative pages and components, using automated checks, keyboard navigation tests and manual assessments of focus, reflow, text, labels, errors and status messages.

The statement should be reviewed at least annually and whenever there are substantial changes to layouts, shared components, form journeys, published documents, embedded media or assessment results.
