iOS and VoiceOver testing

On iPhone and iPad, try reading, choosing and completing an action with VoiceOver. Here are checks for the rotor, Dynamic Type and focus, with guidance on documenting transitions between screens and components.

Essential iPhone and iPad checks with VoiceOver

Listen to what is announced and observe how elements are grouped. Check whether you can understand where you are and which action you can take.

  • iOS

Testing iPhone and iPad with VoiceOver

On iPhone and iPad, observe how VoiceOver groups and announces elements and whether you can complete the journey. Test the rotor, gestures, focus management and settings such as Dynamic Type: behaviour depends on the combination of system and interface.

VoiceOver modes of use to test in practice

Repeat the journey with touch exploration, swiping and the rotor. Also check what happens to focus when opening, closing or changing a screen.

  • Touch exploration and double-tap

Testing iPhone and iPad does not start with swiping alone: explore with a finger, listen to screen grouping and check that a double-tap activates the right control.

  • Swipe

    Linear navigation and reading order

VoiceOver swipes help reveal the actual journey: use them to understand whether reading order suits the task and whether focus returns correctly after context changes.

  • Rotor

VoiceOver rotor for headings, links and form controls

The rotor is a key test of whether a screen provides useful shortcuts and whether headings, links, form fields and other elements have sufficiently robust semantics.

  • Context

External keyboard, Dynamic Type and context changes

On iPad and in more complex flows, also test an external keyboard, large text and context changes to check whether VoiceOver remains predictable as the layout adapts.

VoiceOver: navigation and activation

In Settings → Accessibility → VoiceOver → Commands, check the assigned gestures. VoiceOver Practice lets you try them without triggering actions. When scrolling content, finger movement and page direction are opposite. The edge commands in the System section apply to the specified iPhone models. Exploration gestures select; activation gestures perform the action. Group navigation depends on the configured style. For the Z gesture, move two fingers back and forth three times without lifting them.

1 finger: tap or drag
Explore and select.
1 finger: swipe right / left
Next / previous element.
1 finger: double-tap
Activate the selection.
One finger on the element + tap with another
Split-tap activation.
1 finger: triple-tap
Long-press.
2 fingers: swipe right / left
Enter / leave the group.
4 fingers: tap near the top / bottom
First / last element.
3 fingers: swipe up / down
Next / previous page vertically.
3 fingers: swipe left / right
Page to the right / left.
2 fingers: Z-shaped scrub
Dismiss an alert or go back, where supported.

VoiceOver: reading, rotor and search

Rotor options depend on the screen and configuration. To navigate by headings or links, they must be available in the rotor and present in the content structure.

2 fingers: swipe up
Read from the beginning.
2 fingers: swipe down
Read from the selection.
2 fingers: tap
Pause / resume speech.
3 fingers: tap
Additional information about the selection.
2 fingers: rotate
Choose a rotor option.
Headings, Links or Form Fields rotor + swipe up / down
Previous / next element in the category.
Actions rotor + swipe up / down, then double-tap
Choose and perform an available action.
Speaking Rate or Volume rotor + swipe up / down
Adjust the selected setting.
2 fingers: triple-tap
Item Chooser, with search.
2 fingers: quadruple-tap
VoiceOver Quick Settings.

VoiceOver: typing and editing text

The input gesture changes with the typing style. Check the active mode before attributing a problem to the field. The Edit and Text Selection rotor options require a compatible context.

Standard typing: select the key and double-tap
Enter the character.
Touch typing: explore the key and release
Enter the character on release.
Direct touch typing
Use the keyboard with standard taps.
2 fingers: double-tap on the keyboard
Start / stop dictation.
Selected key: double-tap and hold
Accents and alternative characters in standard typing.
Characters, Words or Lines rotor + swipe up / down
Move the insertion point.
Text Selection rotor: up / down, then left / right
Choose the unit and adjust the selection.
Edit rotor: up / down, then double-tap
Select, copy, cut or paste according to the chosen action.
Shake iPhone and confirm the proposed action
Undo, when available.

VoiceOver: system, audio and Screen Curtain

Screen Curtain turns off the display while keeping the device operational. With both VoiceOver and Zoom on, the taps for audio and Screen Curtain change. The system edge gestures described here concern iPhone: for iPad, consult the model's manual.

2 fingers: double-tap outside the keyboard
Start / stop the contextual action, such as music or recording.
3 fingers: double-tap
VoiceOver audio on / off; with Zoom, use a triple-tap.
3 fingers: triple-tap
Screen Curtain on / off; with Zoom, use a quadruple-tap.
1 finger: double-tap and hold until the three tones
Temporarily perform a standard gesture; ends on release.
2 fingers: double-tap and hold
Edit the element's label.
4 fingers: horizontal swipe
Switch between open apps.
iPhone with Face ID: swipe up from the bottom until two sounds
Home; release after the signal.
iPhone with Face ID: swipe up from the bottom until three sounds
List of open apps.
iPhone with Home button: press / double-press
Home / app list.
iPhone: select the status bar, then swipe up with 3 fingers
Control Centre.
iPhone: select the status bar, then swipe down with 3 fingers
Notifications.
4 fingers: triple-tap
Live Recognition, on compatible devices.

Apple sources and configuration

Use the manual version for the device being tested. Assignments can change: check Commands, Rotor and typing style in VoiceOver settings.

Record devices, system state and observed behaviour

Record device, version, gestures and behaviour during testing. Someone reading the note must be able to reconstruct what you observed.

  • Matrix

State the devices, operating systems and assistive technologies tested

For native apps, the Notes field and methodology section must state the devices, system versions and assistive technologies used in testing.

  • Criteria

Choose sample criteria representative of mobile use

Orientation, Pointer Gestures, Target Size and Status Messages are often more informative than a purely desktop-focused set of examples.

  • Evidence

Keep evidence useful for remediation and release

On mobile, collect screenshots, recordings, focus notes and platform details to preserve context between the audit, fix and retest.

Comparing reports

Illustrative example, not an actual report. It shows the difference between a generic note and one that enables an issue to be reproduced and fixed.

  • Device and OS

    Weak note
    iPhone, updated iOS.
    Verifiable note
iPhone 13 mini with iOS 17.5, VoiceOver enabled, demo build 1.4.0. For an actual comparison using an iPhone SE, also record its generation, iOS version and settings.
  • System state

    Weak note
    Default settings.
    Verifiable note
Larger Text: Larger Accessibility Sizes enabled, slider at its maximum; Reduce Motion enabled, landscape orientation. In an actual report, record the Dynamic Type category if available, or a screenshot of the setting.
  • Observed behaviour

    Weak note
The rotor does not work properly.
    Verifiable note
In checkout, select “Headings” in the rotor and move forward: “Order summary” does not appear in heading navigation, but is read as text through linear swipes. The component's semantics must still be inspected before attributing a cause.
